More About Special Education
Decades of research supports what we know firsthand—joyful and positive school culture has a direct impact on a student’s academic success, mental health, and overall well-being. At KIPP, we are proud to offer wrap-around support for students and families, including mental health programs that take into account a child’s identity, culture, and life experiences. When students experience challenges impacting their ability to thrive in school, our team works with families for a collaborative approach to ensure all students attend, belong, and grow.
Our schools also partner with community organizations to connect families in need with key services, including food, housing, medical, and legal support. Our partners include Housing Authority of San Joaquin, Vision to Learn, YMCA, College Track, Bayview Hunters’ Point Clinic, among many others.

Our classrooms are grounded in high expectations and strong instructional practices, supported by high-quality, standards-aligned curriculum and expert teaching. Students benefit from a structured yet personalized experience that includes advisory, seminar courses, and frequent feedback to support both academic growth and social-emotional development. With access to tutoring, office hours, and targeted support, every student is challenged and supported to reach their full potential.
Through dedicated college and career counseling, students receive one-on-one guidance to navigate the path after high school. As a result, KIPP Northern California graduates consistently achieve strong outcomes and go onto college at high rates and graduate high school prepared with the confidence, skills, and sense of purpose to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
Extracurriculars are a core part of the student experience, and they are designed to help students explore their interests, build leadership skills, and find their voice. Across our campuses, students can participate in a wide range of opportunities including competitive athletics, student government, robotics, debate, arts, music, cultural affinity groups, and service-based clubs. Many of these organizations are student-founded and student-led, giving young people meaningful opportunities to take initiative and shape their school communities.
Our extended school day and dedicated activity periods—such as advisory, office hours, and enrichment blocks—ensure that every student has access to both academic support and enriching experiences. Whether students are joining a team, leading a club, or participating in performances and competitions, they are developing collaboration, confidence, and real-world skills that prepare them for college and career.
Grounded in strong relationships and a culture of belonging, our extracurricular programs create space for students to explore who they are, connect with peers and mentors, and grow beyond the classroom. These experiences are not just add-ons. They are essential to helping students graduate as well-rounded, confident leaders ready to make an impact.
KIPP puts students first. KIPP schools are best-in-class, college-prep public schools in neighborhoods that deserve high-quality options. Most of our students will be the first in their families to attend and graduate from college, and we are proud to provide an excellent, tuition-free education in the communities where they live.

Every public charter school has an authorizer that is responsible for holding the school accountable for compliance with their operating agreement or “charter.” In California, authorizers of charter schools are typically district school boards or county boards of education.
Our schools comply with all applicable local, state, and federal laws, as well as certification requirements for California public charter school teachers.
