Hugo Lawton is an equity-driven school leader and lifelong educator committed to creating joyful, rigorous, and inclusive learning environments for all students. He currently serves as the Principal of KIPP Excelencia Upper School in Redwood City, California, where he has led for the past three years.

Originally from Australia, Hugo began his career as a classroom teacher in the Oakland Unified School District, teaching 5th grade at Greenleaf Elementary. There, he developed a student-centered practice that fostered deep, trust-based partnerships with families and the community. Following his time in the classroom, Hugo served as an Assistant Principal at Rocketship Public Schools.

As a school leader, Hugo is guided by a belief that strong relationships, supported by clear and coherent systems, are the foundation for student growth. At KIPP Excelencia, he works to cultivate a culture of belonging, empowerment, and continuous improvement, ensuring that students, staff, and families alike are seen, supported, and inspired to thrive. Rooted in his belief that schools flourish when they reflect and uplift the communities they serve, Hugo continues to champion community-connected learning, family partnership, and leadership development as essential levers for lasting educational impact.
