Principal in Residence Program

The Principal In Residence (PIR) program is a 1 to 2-year program designed to ensure new School Leaders are prepared to thrive as principals. 

PIRs are full-time members of their school’s leadership team and will have daily opportunities to practice the skills and competencies required to lead high performing schools.

KIPP Northern California is looking for Principal Resident candidates who are committed to our mission that all scholars can lean and achieve at high levels when given the opportunity, have a strong instructional background, a commitment to creating identity-affirming learning experiences, and are looking to develop the leadership skills necessary to lead great schools. 

Specifically, candidates must have: 

  • Completed at least one year of experience in school-wide leadership as an assistant principal or content specialist of culture, in addition to the current year 
    • Preferred: completed two additional years as a Teacher Leader 
  • Completed at least three years of teaching experience with demonstrated exemplary student performance results
  • Demonstrated leadership, management, and coaching experience
  • Evidence of significant and consistent personal and professional achievement 

Responsibilities: The PIR’s role mirrors that of an Assistant Principal for the majority of the development program. PIRs will:

  • Coach and develop teacher, teacher leaders, and deans
  • Contribute to the overall academic and cultural vision of the school
  • Develop leadership skills and competencies in their journey to school leadership through one-on-one coaching, mentorship, formal professional development, and regular feedback
Program Components

Mentorship
As a PIR, you are a full-time member of your residency school leadership team. You will be supported in your development by amentor or school leader who acts as your coach and model for exceptional school leadership.

 

Coaching
PIRs will receive ongoing coaching by a mentor school leader. There may also be additional leadership coaching provided.

 

Cohort Professional Development
PIRs will receive formal professional development aligned to the development roadmap and targeting specific developmental needs alongside a cohort of peers who will lead schools in coming years.

 

Readiness Checklist
Readiness checkpoints provide an opportunity for the PIR and support team to reflect on the progress towards becoming a school leader.

 

Transition Planning
PIRs receive support in planning to step into a school leader position.
