Your Mental Health Matters

Everyday mental health care

Taking care of our mental health is an everyday task, just like taking care of our physical health. Just like you want to get enough sleep, food, and water, you want to take care your emotional, mental, and spiritual needs.

One way you can do this is by identifying your self-love love-languages. Do you need words of affirmation, quality time, physical touch, acts of service, or gifts today? Pick one from the category that you need! Whether you journal (some writing prompts here), play a video game, go on a walk, do a 5 minute meditation, text a friend, or have a snack, taking care of yourself is important!

Additionally, here are some important reminders from Therapy for Latinx about taking care of our mental health and supporting a loved one struggling with their mental health.

There are times when you may need further support and need to seek professional support. As college students, there are a number of resources for you, often at a low cost or free!

On your campus: to find mental health support on your campus, Google “mental health resources (campus name)” to navigate your options. Please let us know if you would like support with this research!

Palo Alto University: PAU is offering free counseling to college students during this pandemic. You can learn more about the program here, and fill out the intake form here.

Another great option is the Crisis Text Line. You can text HOME to 741741 any time of day and a counselor will be able to text with you! You don’t have to be in a crisis to want to chat with a counselor; maybe you just need someone to talk to or want to process some things going on in your life. This is a great, free resource!

Know that asking for help is a part of being human! Everyone needs support and encouragement, especially with the times that we are living through right now.

To listen to an illuminating conversation with a KIPP alumna and KTC advisors about how we experience mental health, check out our Igniting VXCES podcast episode, BIPOC & Mental Health. You can listen on Spotify or Spreaker!

As always, please reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns. We are here to support you no matter what!
